Allergy Tests

Allergy testing involves having a blood test to find out what substance/allergen may trigger an allergic reaction in a person. Allergy blood tests look for substances in the blood called antibodies. The most common type of blood test used is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA, EIA). It measures the blood level of a type of antibody, IgE. IgE levels are often higher in people who have allergies.
Why blood tests are performed instead of the traditional skin/scratch tests?
Lab tests for allergies are performed to uncover which substances/allergens are responsible for an allergic reaction. In certain cases, blood tests are performed due in part or because the patient:
- Has hives or another skin condition, such as eczema, that makes it hard to see the results of skin testing.
- Cannot stop taking a medicine, such as an antihistamine or tricyclic antidepressant, that may prevent or reduce a reaction to a substance even when a person is allergic to the substance.
- Has had a severe allergic reaction.
- Has had positive skin tests to many foods.
